8:11 pm - Leaving on a jet plane
Two important matters of business:
1. I leave tomorrow. I'm not packed. I don't even think I have everything I need. Yet go I shall. (Thank god for a couple days in LA!)

2. It's a new blog! (Oh, don't you just love having to update your friends page?) Due to a happy fuzzy feeling from impending travel, and the necessity for a family-friendly blog, and hey, everyone's doing it, I've got a new niche on the intra nets. For livejournal purists, it's at here, which will be the uncensored public version of whatever I feel like typing. If you want the clean travel log, go to this one.

Anyway. Despite what the time stamp says, it's late, and I'm getting a measly three hours of sleep tonight. Thank god for one last night of blues, a well-needed sisterly bonding moment, and Sharis.

4:58 pm - Oh Jesus, what have I been up to?
Bullets!
-Slowly amassing required things for Peru
-Finished my FreeGeek classes, huzzah!
-Got to go dancing with Heather since she's in town, and we had a blast!
-Garage-saling with Justin (new swing dress, Cabin Fever by Eli Roth, my cinematic hero, a Latin dictionary)
-Hanging at Freddy's pool
-Much fun with marshmallows and fire. Pictures under the cut )
-Also sparkling apple cider and stargazing and bad poetry. Some traditions die hard.
-FUCK I'M LEAVING TOMORROW!

7:39 pm - Link roundup and recent vagaries
For the ladies:
Fabio!

For Rosey:
Etiquette!

For those interested in ficticious companies:
SIBTA
and the story

Of course there was going to be more, but watch me forget it all.

Dancing has been quite lovely (tango/blues fusion= yummy), got to pop over to Saturday Market, slowly working through FreeGeek, mastering the kantele and picking up juggling, just because. And now I might get that damn coffeehouse job after all. ::grumble grumble:: Also, Rosey's tea party on Saturday was lovely-- we ate until we were stuffed full of tiny foods, and got to dress up and be girly! :D

Also, for those in LA: I get in on June 28th, early afternoon. I leave LAX at 1.55am on the first (ouch). Consolidated partying!
That is all, time to go throw tennis balls around my room.

5:34 pm - Rocked into next week!
Eugene was fun, a three-course lunch with Allison (if coffee and ice cream count as separate courses), and then off to the venue. Unlike Inland Invasion, this was very Oregonian-- large damp field. But free parking!

Wasn't a fan of most of the opening acts. The Supersuckers were pretty good (I'm a bit of a sucker for the country/classic rock acts), and they had a wonderful stage presence. Anytime a performer bitches at audience members, I'm hooked. Also, That 1 Guy was awesome. Just go check out the site, since I can't really encapsulate his performance into words. (Well, maybe some: One-man bands kick ass.)

Also ran into Britney (from high school), which was random yet cool, and we chatted a bit. Weird.

Anyway. The Presidents were simply awesome! They played "Kitty," "Back Porch," "Love Everybody," "Lump," "Kick Out the Jam," "Zero Friction," "Highway Forever," and an encore of "Peaches," plus some other good ones I didn't know. Highlights inculded the miniature invisible harmonica, talking about "fucking meat shakes!," playing a final hit for a song 120-something times, and the best part-- a segue into "Shout," including making the whole audience sing the "a little bit softer now" part on the ground. (Like, sitting in the mud) Yay audience participation!

Also, I was pleasantly surprised about Everclear, since I wasn't a huge fan to begin with, and had heard bad things. But they did a lot of songs I knew, and there's something wonderful about screaming a song while jumping up and down in the rain and mud (it rained almost the whole time, did I mention that?) And they did a couple encores, which was nice, and a couple good acoustic songs. Oh, and they did "867-5309" for their last encore, which was good and sing-able, and they managed to fill the stage up rather well with girls from the audience. Always good.

Ending with slipping to the car in the dark and rain, being pleasantly soaked, and listening to Harry Belafonte with Justin.
Totally worth it all.

10:58 pm - The summer has been lovely, but too boring to put in any format other than bullets.
-Blues dancing is the hottest thing in the world. Hell. Yes. (Swing has been so-so, but I won't complain)
-Voodoo doughnuts is wonderful, hurrah Portland!
-Estudio mal espanol. I'm so screwed.
-Went to FreeGeek with Justin, so I'll get to learn how to built computers this summer and bump up the geek cred :D
-Lots of reading and study and in general being a good girl around the house. Also abusing the library cards of others.
-Finnish lap harp= harder to play than you'd think.
-Looks to be a parent-drama-free summer, for which I am thankful. Dad has decreed that I won't get a job, and must study. Hence all the afore-mentioned study. Yay, I think? But bonus points for him giving me a kickass hunting jacket for the dig!
-Still not sick of the rain yet...

Eugene, Allison, PUSA, and Everclear tomorrow!!

4:11 pm - Home again, home again, jiggity jig (with pictures!)
Well, let's see:
We had a so magic! graduation, where Katrina and I wore our jackets, and Cindy was lovely in a pink Goodwill dress (lady, send me pics!) Hurrah! Cindy's outta there!
I spent the weekend in San Diego with my mom and sister, which was typical. Was allowed to buy many many things since I was with Laura, and had dinner at one of the best restaurants ever, but had to deal with lots of family time. Still good, I suppose. We did find the One Fish, Two Fish, Dead Fish, Shoe Fish: Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Mwahaha.

Monday night was a sort of stay at home impromptu get-together for my last night. Made interesting by Katrina's dad spending the night in our house and me not having a bed put together anymore. Cindy and I finally cashed in on Ralph's wine club ($200 spent on wine=> $10 coupon for wine), too! For anyone wondering just how alcoholic I am, this is the labors of a semester. As we calculated, that's one human worth of alcohol.

Tuesday was the moving. A couple random guys on bikes helped my mom and I load the car, and then Mike, Kyle, and Cindy were kind enough to join in the fun of loading the moving truck, getting lost, unloading the truck, and filling the storage thing. My furniture is now safely housed in Slauson, guarded over by Harrison. Then my mom bought us all food and milkshakes. Cindy and I made food art: Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting See the guy? Eh? Bonus points for my mom liking my friends, and answering the question: Why would you keep a lime in your pocket? Answer: For all those wild margaritas out there.

The drive was uneventful and long, as usual. Thank God for Thursday dancing in Portland (for those not in the know, my last swing night in LA didn't happen, since all my swing friends bailed on me last minute. Cum dumpsters, all of them). But I got to lust after Ben and see Rosey. Also, I should mention that I've been in town for three nights, and I've been to Sharis every night. Ah, to be home again.
Now I just need a job since I'm spending my days reading, and trying to study Spanish, and-- holy shit, I'm being productive! Well yay for summer and being home. 'S gonna be a good one :D

11:26 am
Finals are over. (For me, at least) So far, I've heard from one class (A in Criminal Behavior, but since almost half of the class got an A on the curve, I feel I bit like I cheated). Mostly I just worried about my Psyc490 write-up (how do you write five pages about what you've learned if you learned nothing?) and my poetry portfolio. But now it's all over!

Last Friday was No Pants Day, and Cindy and I celebrated by going to Sally's (the beauty supply store) in boxers, and lounged on our front lawn. Mmm, LA. Recently my favorite musical artists have been Harry Belafonte, Tom Jones, and Barry Manilow.

Saturday I went to my first-ever frat invite (like a party, but they bus you somewhere). In this case, it was a "Tiki Cruise." It was pretty fun-- Shauna dressed up like Mary-Ann, I went as Ginger, and Shauna's boy went as the Skipper. We took an hour-long bus ride (yeesh), and then basically got on this floating bar that ferried us around the bay in circles the whole night. But the girls were nice, the drinks were pretty tasty and rufie-free, and I made some friends. Even though the guy who was technically my "date" (meaning that Shauna's boy just signed me up since this other guy didn't have a date) kinda ran away from me. But yes, good times.

Monday was fun to just hang with Patty (our poetry teacher) at Starbucks. Turns out she's leaving to teach at Long Beach, which is so sad! But at least I got her for both intro classes before she left, mwahaha.

Last night Cindy and I made some of the rounds-- we had venti All-Nighters at Ragazzi (the largest, more caffinated drink they have), ran the hovercraft through the reflecting pool at Leavey (and ended up strolling and dancing in the fountain with our portable Port). Then went to a party with Shauna and Adriana, and stayed until God knows when. I'm going to miss the late nights sitting on front steps.

Hm, I doubt I've covered everything from the past two weeks or so. I finished a scarf, that's pretty cool too, eh?
OK, I'm off to figure out why I'm awake before noon when I stayed out so awfully late. (Allison, I'm gonna do the interview later today. I just wanted you to know I haven't forgotten it :D )

1:39 pm - Too good not to share
One day at the Coke plant, a gaggle of researchers happened to be returning from a coffee run, carefully navigating the series of catwalks above the giant open vats of Coke. Unfortunately, they didn't see the "Careful: Wet Floor" sign. Coffee mugs go flying, and fall into the vats with a spectacular splash. When the smoke has cleared, the lowly intern eagerly approaches the CEO, who is now covered in soda. "I'll get a mop, sir!" "No, wait--" The CEO pauses dramatically. "Get me a straw."
And thus Coke Blak was born.

Coke Blak: The story is as good as the taste.

Seriously, people. YUM.
This is what happens when I stay up 'til 6am, and then get woken up by barking early in the morning.

5:34 pm - By my livejournal updating standards, I am officially dead.
Highlights include:
-Getting my brain scanned for money (nothing out of the ordinary, folks, sorry. I think I can still get a picture of it...)
-Getting drunk in front of Tommy in the middle of the day with Shauna and some other girls
-Finishing my project for 314!
-A few parties that were pretty good
-Going out drinking with the boys (all the girls backed out) from the Alcohol Study. Jed (our grad student project leader) getting tipsy and offering life advice. ("Dating, all that, it's just a numbers game. So it's in your best interest to just ask out as many people as possible. Except for you (that's directed at me). You should just let as many guys ask you out as possible." Hahaha.
-Saddle Ranch for Shauna's birthday! Cindy came, and I managed to drag along my swing girls, so we had quite the blast, including all of us riding the mechanical bull (I won with 37 seconds, technicalities be damned-- booya!) Then we had a failed attempt at pranking the senior fountain run (they can't all be fish...) and Katrina and I put in an all-nighter at Leavey (though she napped at 4am. Weak.)

This leaves me with really sore legs (Stupid bull), really tired, but only one more project and one final to worry about. Yay!

11:42 pm - Happy happy Easter. And days before.
Thursday was a super day. I had Latin, and was in such a good mood I went straight home to make those wonderful peanut butter cookies for my poetry class. Of course, I had completely forgotten about a meeting I was supposed to go to, so then I had to come up with some excuse. No worries, though, because I had cookies. Then there was a chance meeting with Katrina, Paul, and Garen before my class, which resulted in post-class plans. Class itself was super fun and full of cookies and schenanigans and note-passing and all that. Afterwards, there was lying in the backyard (mmm, sunny weather) in swimsuits with beer. Aaaaah.
That evening saw the Dance Club's annual event, dancing with a live band in front of Tommy. It was meh, but I got to see my girls, and it was pretty fun. We hit up lindygroove after (with Chris, who was in from Bakersfield!!), and I danced until I hurt. It was a spectacular night, including a dance with my Latin teacher.

On Saturday, Adriana and I went to Springfest. It was pretty good-- Ozma kinda sucked live, but Saul was neat to see, and Mos Def was incredible. After that, there was partying at Omar's, which included my first Easter clove, lots of drinking (Katrina assures me I was "amusing"), a lot of really awesome people, and dancing until 3am (so late we had to get a ride from DPS since Cruiser wasn't running anymore).

And today:
Got up early, and barely survived the flurry of baking and cooking going on. I made these chocolate scones, as well as some homemade peeps. We ended up with Katrina, Janelle, Lexie, and Shauna, and it was a blast. After, I barely had time to talk to my parents, bake a cake, and get whipped cream all over the kitchen before I went to Mike's for Lexie's Easter dinner. After some Mario Party time, there was more food (So full...)
As far as Easter thoughts go, I did survive Lent (minus Emily's goodbye hookah party for smoking). Status is still not addicted to smoking, and damn grateful to be eating chocolate again. Easter is now one of my favorite holidays. Nothing like having tiny chocolate eggs in random places around the house. :D

Essay due Wednesday. We'll see.

5:42 pm - ATTENTION: I AM AWESOME
In case you've been living under a rock for the past few months of my life, you've heard about my undying unrequited lusting after my cute TA. For MONTHS. You may also been aware of my longstanding pledge to ask him out the next time I see him.
AND I JUST DID.
For the record, he said he'd like to, but his girlfriend wouldn't like it that much.
But that's not the point. The point is that I managed to ask out a boy, cold turkey. And I was pretty damn smooth about it. And took defeat gracefully.
So boo-yah! I enjoy being without regrets in life, it's rather nice. Now I can stop pining after him. (Or kill the girlfriend.)
:D

3:05 pm - The Easiest Peanut Butter Cookies In The World
(Jenny, just for you:)

-1 cup peanut butter
-1 cup sugar
-1 egg
-1 tsp vanilla (or not, I didn't have any when I made these...)
Mix everything together. Bake at 350 F, for 8-11 minutes. Let them cool a lot before you try to move them, because they get all crumbly.

That's all. See? Easy.

1:02 am - to trend off cindy: a list of good things
-puppy! george matza, a golden retriever, is now living at our house. he is adorable in every way and i love him to death!
-the pizza place that katrina, erin and i hit up, with good food and a giant cthulhu!
-sewing, and making some jeans and a shirt wearable again!
-beauty and the geek party: drinking games, firefly, and a boy. ::cough cough::
-peanut butter cookies which involve a total of four ingredients and are still pretty tasty.
-the first of my textbooks for this summer got here!

alright, i'm done.

9:07 pm - more weekend stuff + prison! (excursion 2)
well, sunday wasn't so hot with the family. everything we tried to go do we missed. on the other hand, it was still a kickass weekend, and when my dad left, he told me how proud he was of me, and that was just wonderful.

today, i got to visit the twin towers facility (the jail for the mental cases). this was perhaps better than the men's central jail tour!
our guard was super nice, for starters. we saw the medical area, the isolation cells, a couple of the normal levels, level six (the overflow level for seven, where they keep all the major crazies). this level included the naked guy who thought he was a woman, and stood right by his glass door with his junk all tucked (ouch). we also got to go into one of the overlooking control rooms for one level (very panopticon-ish, even with the windows tinted), and i got to open and close one of the doors.
the best part was when our guard stopped to chat to some of the inmates putting away the dinner things. he grabs one of the burritos and asks if anyone wants to try it. sadly, i was the only taker. it wasn't really all that bad. just like a normal bean burrito, really. (can i note that my class is made up of wimps, who wouldn't even try it after i'd eaten some). good good times.

other good things: walking in the rain, even if i was soaked through. firefly. michael caine (by kyle, for those who care). and again, prison burritos!

1:57 am - my mom was right: phi beta kappa does bring good things in life
(of the more intangible sort, of course)

so my dad's been in town for my induction ceremony into phi beta kappa (some sort of honor society). on thursday, he came in, and we didn't really do anything-- but we got dinner, and since he pooped out early, i got to go swing dancing with erin for her bday! hurrah! so that was great times.

on friday, laura came in, too, and we hit up the ceremony (pretty boring, of course. and the bribery desserts at the end pretty much all had chocolate, dammit!). after that, we came home, watched kung fu hustle, and then grabbed some food (thanks to chris!) at this wonderful little sushi restaurant. oh man, SO good.

and today-- today was marvelous. one of the best weekend days ever.
i had to get up early for the overseas orientation session, which turned out to be a big waste of time (though a good chance to socialize while they were talking). it even ran over, so we didn't get to go to a few things we wanted today. but we decided to head to venice beach. so we walked around a bunch, checked out some of the best street performers i've seen, and ended up in a massive hat store, where, of course, each of us got a hat (hah, it is genetic). then we headed up to santa monica, got some yummy dinner, and then had a few hours to kill before our planned concert-going. so, walking down the pier, we hit the arcade. i proceeded to soundly thrash both laura and dad at air hockey, dad failed miserably at whack-a-mole, and laura kicked my ass at being good at pinball. it was loads of fun.

then we got back to the venue, with still over an hour to spare. so we burned a lot of time playing poker (ah, nostaligia). laura introduced me to the drummer, who actually rememebred my name from her telling him when she saw them a couple nights ago (wow). and oh man, can the red elvises ROCK. the outfits are god-awful/ ghetto-fabulous, and laura and i danced and sang to almost every song (so did everyone else, for that matter. these are hard core fans, and it was a perfectly small venue). we even squeezed in a swing dance, and danced around the room about five times in a conga line. it was basically a huge orgy of wonderful and fun and singing and dancing and silliness and i think they may have beat out ok go as best live show ever. (it was even more amazing because dad stayed the WHOLE time-- i mean, look how late i've gotten home!-- AND was even clapping along a lot of the time!!)

anyway-- i have to get up early tomorrow for more family joy, but i just had to share/record.

btw, the red elvises will be back on april 21. i will be going. who wants to come?

'night.

10:57 pm - I LOVE LA
today on campus they were filming the oc (yes, it's trashy tv, but it's addicting, good times trashy tv!)
they had decked out founder's park to look like brown (go figure) and i got to walk my bike past adam brody, and he was *this far away* and wearing sunglasses and talking (so really, he's not as attractive in real life. strikes me as a bit of a diva, actually). mwahaha.
after my afternoon class, me and another girl went and ogled for about 15 minutes. you could only see his back, but it was hilarious to listen to the people around us. some people even took pictures. of his back. rediculous.

so yes. that was exciting. but i think i'll have to stop lusting after him due to his aloof vibes, and that's always sad. :(

4:36 pm - i actually don't have anything interesting
lately it's been quiet here. some midterms last week, a fair amount of trying to get ready for upcoming things. right now it's raining and i just don't feel like doing anything productive, so it's an update!

1. on sunday, some of the palaverians ventured downtown to clifton's cafeteria, which is completely nondescript on the outside, but the inside is decorated like a forest. animatronic racoons and all. the food was average (the mysteriously goopy strawberry shortcake balanced by the incredible turkey) and pricey, but it was worth it, and good times.

2. i finally saw the goonies (it was meh), but at least now i can feel that good old oregonian pride in astoria. yay!

3. like i said, it is raining something awful. my story of the day is that i had to walk to campus (about five blocks) this morning without a hood, jacket, umbella...you get the idea. so by the time i get to campus i look like i've jumped into the ocean, and people are either giving me encouraging smiles or laughing at me. one girl looks at me, goes "awww," and then turns to her friend and points me out. what, you've never seen a wet person before? in the rain?? it was rather silly.

only a couple days til my dad gets here (and the house is vaguely clean now)!

2:07 am - i am soon to be a globe-trotting bundle of greatness
1. i got into the peru mortuary archaeology program i applied for! which means that for the month of july, i'll be digging up skeletons. time to learn spanish and get my innoculations in order. also, i got my place in the program over the people in the waiting list 1. because i have finnish heritage or 2. because i am one smooth talker over email. either way, i rocked the application.

2. i got into u of edinburgh! which means the paaj branch of us maitlands will be invading scotland in the fall (my grandma and her sister will visit, plus hopefully my dad and mom and maybe even sister.) i'm super excited for the next semester. mwahaha.

...fuck. let's hope i get me some scholarships and jobs to pay for all this.

spring break draws to a close, and i have to admit that as usual, i spent a large chunk of time at sharis. but hey, good times. lots of coffee and playing cards, and a bonus that i got to see stephanie! and we hit up WLHS (first time in over a year, maybe two), and ran into mr. west. oh man, does he look old! but he remembered us, so we got to catch up a bit. pretty fun times.

time to hit the hay before the pre-flight flurry of activity tomorrow.

1:49 pm - best weekend ever: confessions from the naughty blues room, and other adventures
day 1, OCLX:
i skipped out on the labs friday to drive with erin down to anaheim, where she was letting me crash at her parents' place. we wasted the day with movies and then hit up the first night of the exchange. the atomic ballroom is a decent place, kinda small for an exchange, but the music was great (i danced to both songs from the jungle book) and there were countless good dances, and everyone was super nice. ran into our main boys from la, and a few other guys we knew. this night was incredible. the best way to explain: i kept wanting to call people and tell then i loved them after. it was that good.

day 2, disneyland!:
erin had worked there for a long time, so she got us in free. she also had stolen a bunch of those fast pass line cutting things, so we hardly ever waited. and she knew half the ride attendants (pretty much everyone in california adventures). it was pretty sweet. we hit up all the main rides in CA-- including her baby, the tower of terror (aaaah, so fun! and with my own personal tour guide, i got to hear all the fun details), the muppet 3d show (yes, i'm a dork), etc. "soarin' " ("hanggliding over california"= a hanging seat thing over imax screen) wins the extreme disney prize for incredible detail: they had SCENTS. you flew over an orange grove, you smelled the fucking oranges. same with the ocean. OMFG, i wanted to hug whoever thought of that. also i got to ride that roller coaster that goes in a loop around mickey's head. just like the commercial. so there.
then courtney joined us and we went to the main park. i got made fun of for not realizing that "it's a small world after all" was a boat ride. how was i supposed to know that? but it was a blast. also "mr. toad's wild ride" (it goes through Hell-- i mean, with the heat and the sulfur smell and everything. can they do that, with kids??) and the teacups and space mountain and the tiki room and indiana jones and mansion (staffed with all cute boys for some reason) and peter pan and the materhorn (fun fact: the yeti is named harold. also, there's a half-court in the break room of that one) probably more i'm forgetting. it was wonderful, and despite worries, we only had a dash of rain.

day 2, OCLX main night:
aw, sad. turns out the oc kids are cliquish and, in some cases, enough of lindy snobs to actually point and judge while you're dancing near certain peoples. also, i had borrowed a skirt that definitely was flashing my underwear all over the place. and the band was ok, but no mid-tempo songs.
but that was the worst.
despite all that, we had a blast-- our swing boys were there again, and there were a lot of fun dances, and omg, the naughty blues room-- a small sauna of a room that was incredible. i got in some fabulous blues dancing in, and made a denver friend, and then we had our late-night sandwiches and hung out, and a drunk guy who works at lindygroove hit on me. also, i got to dance to one of the songs from buffy: the musical. and yes, it was as fun as you'd imagine. also, i ran into laura's ex-roommate in the blues room. crazy.
we finally decided to crash, so hugs all around and we were off.

day 3, the drive home:
my rideshare guy from craigslist picked me up at 8ish (two hours of sleep. ouch) erin deemed him harmless-- complete hippie, really-- and off we went. i learned a bunch about the fishing industry, which sounds crazy, we had some fabulous diner food, a mini snowball fight in the mountains, and kicked ass (we made the trip in 15 hours-- 16 is the norm, and that's going from the heart of LA). almost no traffic either, and though the rental stalled out a couple times on the highway (eek) it was fine. really, good times. also, he had good cds, hurrah! we finally got home, and then it was the usual sharis run and finally home. yay spring break!

2:21 am - For the record:
i will be home to portland sometime sunday evening/night. i will be horribly sleep deprived, as usual, but if anyone is up for a sharis run, let me know and we will do it.

that is all. if i don't show, i've been killed by the fisherman.
